Hub for geeks in Joburg!

Posted on 11 May 2010 by Eve Dmochowska

I have been waiting a *really* long time to be able to say this, but after many attempts, and dozens of viewed properties I am happy to say that the hot desking concept we have all been talking about for ages is READY TO GO!

Geekspace will be 500m2 devoted to helping entrepreneurs conquer the online space. Most of us are (or know of) coders who sit huddled in their bedroom, separated from the rest of the civil world, and who would really benefit from being a part of an ecosystem that could “feed” everyone in it symbiotically.

I am working out the finer details (including lease negotiations) but all of these are semantics: the Geekspace will be ready to launch July 1, and the space should be available June 1 if you don’t mind working in slight chaos while we set up.

The place I have in mind is in Bryanston, 5 minutes away from William Nicol and thus relatively close to the highway. Plenty, plenty of FREE parking (HUGE issue, trust me…most buildings want from R400 per bay). (But the lease hasn’t been signed, and I have 2 back up locations).

Should you be accepted into the space, you will get a desk, chair, Internet connectivity etc etc. There is a super entertainment area, including a bar (yes!) and loads and loads of built in fun. Also: free use of the boardroom, meeting rooms, etc. Private offices are also available, but very limited. Hoping to get DSTV and TVs in time for World Cup etc. There is a training room, a library, kitchens, etc etc. In other words…. truly AWESOME.

Oh, and the space will be a 24/7 so it will *never close*.

I am looking for a diverse mix of tenants, so it doesn’t all have to be “online people”, but it does have to be people that feed the online ecosystem. So, aside from coders, it can be marketing, strategy, legal, financial etc. Diversity is the key. Yes, also when it comes to colour.

The cost will be kept to the lowest possible. Still finalizing numbers, and dependent on sponsorships etc, but I wouldn’t want to cross the R990 per desk, per month fee. This includes the furniture, parking, facilities etc, but *might* not include bandwidth. You have to bring your own laptop.

Leases are month to month.

If you are starting up a venture, or have been accepted into the Crowdfund programme, you would most likely not incur any cost at all for the first 3 months. Also, if you are busy playing here, but really cannot afford to pay, you should just talk to me. This isn’t so much about revenue as it is about making things happen.

I will post much more details soon (including a dedicated website to this), but I just wanted to get the word out and start gathering some feedback of interest.

If you are interested in renting a desk for about R1,000, please email me directly, asap. First come first served, and space is limited. eved@ideabank.co.za, with GEEKSPACE in subject line, please. I need to know how many desks, who you are and what you do.

  • would it be possible to work with you to make a re skinned version of existing software so we can help the public to solve other social issues (Ideally using that http://www.TRAIDmark.org business
structure)? Maybe working with someone like
    http://www.ONEworldHEALTH.org or http://www.earth.org which
is closing so maybe this is something I could help you take on so everyone can share local knowledge? Also can http://www.WEBiversity.org
share video's and create http://www.TRUSTlibrary.org with your team? Ed http://www.whymandesign.com

Yeah security is a huge problem. Another problem is that daily rental becomes to expensive and so those desks wont get used. Why would someone pay R100 per day on short term, i mean thats R3100 per month, along way from R1000 goal. Me thinks if its a more reasonable rate like say R50 then these type of desks will be popular especially if you have offices in a few cities, but as soon as they get over priced then it becomes pointless. Not an easy market to crack, but you can do it, dont give up ;-)

  • EveDmochowska

Ummm...not in much of a mood to give up, but thanks.

R100 p/d is not R3,100 per month. Not really. The math is more along the lines of: will I spend more than half my work time at Gekspace? If yes, then take a full desk. If not, then we cannot subsidize you past the R100 p/day mark, because we are not in fact a charity. We will be charitable enough to offer you our space even though you are not part of our permanent team, but for a fair price.

Sitting at Seattle or other coffee shop will cost you more, if you consider parking, coffee and bandwidth costs. Plus, forget bathroom breaks!

  • simonbfree

Btw Eve not sure if you seen this http://www.regus.co.za/
They offer similar service with office space in over 1000 destinations globaly for only R64 per day. The conference room, parking etc etc is paid seperately. I have used the service before and it is top quality. Maybe an idea would be to approach them to partner? Anyway just an idea. Don't want to be a party pooper, just thinking big. Your service is still vastly cheaper and so maybe smaller is better ;-)

  • EveDmochowska

    Yep.

The problem is that when I applied for a ONE person space at The Business Centre in Fourways, the initial outlay was R16,500. Cool if you are a Nokia, not so cool if you are a startup.

The bandwidth, parking, extras, deposits etc is what kills the deal.

  • simonbfree

Yeah thats alwasy the problem. Property rental these days is huge and the small guys always get biten, this is why most folks just use home offices. I really hope you can pull this off. Btw you should look at having a daily rate. So that someone passing through who needs a desk for the day can rent on a shorter term say R40 per day. Obviously these type of desks will be limited to first come first served, but me thinks a good idea to have a few of them available. I for one would never book a monthly spot, because I live in Plett, however if I am up in Jhb and need an office for the day, wouldnt mind renting a spot per day.. Anyway just an idea to make this system better. Keep up the great work..

  • EveDmochowska

There will def be a daily rate, but it looks like those kind of desks are going to be very limited. And the rate will be closer to R100 p/d, and you will still need to be screened and accepted....security is an issue, and day passes are the biggest problem in this regard.

But one step at a time.....

  • simonbfree

Great idea Eve. You know what would make it even cooler? If the Cape Town, Jhb, Durban, Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, George branches which will eventually all pop up are hot swopable. So a geek can move between locations and have a desk at any of the branches when he arrives. Sort of an office away from home nationwide and all for under R990 pm. Now that would rock ;-)

Anyway lets see how this grows going to be interesting to watch

  • internetadsales

IAS might even be interested in this! Somewhat like the old BandwidthBarn is it not?

  • EveDmochowska

I visited the Bandwidth Barn for teh first time this week....the geekspace will be different becasue it will be MUCH more open, for a start.

Think Cafe Neo, rather than Bandwidth Barn.

  • paulthornton

This is AWESOME. What an excellent idea and so needed here. I am one of those guys who sits in his house and works during the nights devoid of fantastic company and amazing ideas. I am totally keen to explore this. Eve, you are creating an Online Mecca here. Nicely done!

  • EveDmochowska

So I can put you down for one desk, then ? :-)

  • EveDmochowska

We are def looking into doing a space in CTown, because some #crowdfund ideas are coming from there, and we need to house them. So one good thing leads to another.

Let me get Joburg going, and in the meantime I'll scout CTown for good locations. Suggestions as to what area would work best?

  • RichardMulholland

Any space for companies? Missing Link is looking to move.

  • Damnit I can't express how much I'd love to have something like this in Cape Town. Even in profanities. What I will say is that I am truly envious of JHB for the first time in my life.

Hopefully this takes off and other cities start setting up similar spaces. Lord knows the local web can use them.

  • Congrats, Eve.

This is cool. Know you've probably heard of the iHub in Nairobi. Similar deal, launching in a little while. Will be down there for NetProphet and in Johannesburg for a bit. Would be cool to chat if you're available.

Otherwise, awesome stuff and look forward to staying posted on it all.

  • Richard

Excellent, can you give us an idea of when this is launching. We need a firm date as we're currently reaching the end of our lease and this would be perfect for us.

Also when are you going to collect the cash that I pledged for Crowd Fund so that you can start funding ideas? That R1000 is burning a hole in my pocket :)

  • EveDmochowska

Depending on bandwidth issues, it will be either June 1 or July 1. The space will probably be avlb anyway on June 1, if you have 3G connection etc.

  • What a simply brilliant idea - looking forward to your expansion to CT!

  • Wendy

isn't that what bandwidth barn is essentially?

  • Possibly, they appear to overlap but my initial feeling from BWB is that their service or their approach to the same problem is not the same.

One silly example - I was on their website for 10 mins looking for pricing?! Also BWB seems to have some affiliation to the gov, and that even though the DA runs a from what I have seen a tight ship, often leads to bureaucracy staining.

  • Cape Town people first need to decide on a name, then logo. Choose the colour schemes, have a meeting to raise awareness and then form a committee. Vote for members and have more meetings to raise awareness then forget what they were doing in the first place.

  • And then ignore all the social media outcry.

  • This is truly inspiring! Now when you succeed (not if) you need to setup something similar in CT!

    Very nicely done.

  • When's the Cape Town one opening? All the Silicon Cape okes better get their asses in gear!

  • I agree Paul, I cannot wait to see what comes out of this!

  • Eve, assuming this all comes together as you've described you will be sitting on a talent gold mine. Nicely done. Can we come visit some time and ogle?

  • EveDmochowska

    I insist on it!
